A new foundation for WNBA player Renee Montgomery

Renee Montgomery, a guard for the Atlanta Dream of the WNBA, is more than an athlete. In addition to being named an all-star in 2012, 6th woman of the year in 2013, and holding the WNBA record for most 3 pointers made in a half, Renee’s added actress and philanthropist to her already impressive resume. Her philanthropist nature can be seen across her social media pages as she’s worked with the Memphis Grizzlies at their Girl Summit and played in Josh Norman’s celebrity basketball game benefiting the Boys and Girls Club and Starz24.

Still wanting to do more to positively impact her community, Renee started her own foundation: the Renee Montgomery Foundation. Officially founded on January 15, 2019, Renee’s non-profit was something she’s thought about for a while. When she finally had the opportunity and the time this past offseason, she started the process right away. With the launch of the foundation's website on May 12th, 2019, Renee and her team are ready to start giving back to the community. The Renee Montgomery Foundation aims to impact youth through the lessons learned in sports. Some of these lessons include: leadership, teamwork, self-discipline, confidence, and sportsmanship. Providing fun experiences to both youth and their families will allow them to be better equipped to handle life’s challenges. The principles acquired aren’t just valuable in sports, they are valuable life lessons. Renee’s 3x3 boys and girls basketball tournament on August 18th is just one of the many initiatives that provides an opportunity for this. The foundation is also a means of growing awareness for women’s sports, particularly women’s basketball. The Boys and Girls Club Games, taking place June 23rd and July 21, are an opportunity for those who have never been to a WNBA game to experience it. The “Let’s Go Pro” initiative on June 23rd is the most anticipated. A charter bus is bringing fans from West Virginia, Renee’s home state, to Atlanta to watch the game. There are no major league professional sports in West Virginia, only minor league sports that include baseball, soccer, and hockey. This initiative is an opportunity to further expose the community to sports since many have never had the chance to attend a professional game. The bus will be filled with family, friends, and those who have been following Renee throughout her career. While only one bus is planned, for now, Renee hopes to expand this initiative in the future.
